Gracia district, El Coll neighborhood is a neighborhood of Barcelona located in the Gracia district. It limits with the neighborhoods of La Salud and Vallcarca and the Penitentes of the Gracia district, and La Teixonera and El Carmelo of the Horta-Guinardó district. It has 7391 inhabitants (2016) and is located at the foot of the Coll hill, about 150 meters above the sea.
The origin of the neighborhood is located in the church of Nuestra Señora del Coll, which dates from the eleventh century.Originally, the sanctuary was called Mare de Déu de la Font-rúbia.3 The oldest references to this neighborhood date from the year 1099.
The feudal lords were going to hunt the wild boar in the mountains near the Coll, shortly before the bandits settled in the Cuevas d'en Cimany, which later became important iron mines.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the neighborhood began to fill with farmhouses and houses. However, it was still a predominantly rural area, and used to be the frequently chosen setting for Lerroux's Radical Republican Party for its Republican fraternal picnics.3 The neighborhood was quite poorly connected until the construction of the Vallcarca bridge in 1923.3 In 1930 the Editorial Bruguera, specialized in comic strips, settled in the area.3
In the 1960s, El Coll suffered from urban fever and was invaded by all kinds of buildings that occupied all the remaining free spaces, a clear example of anarcho-urbanism.3 In those years, the neighborhood residents' association was born, which had among its first demands the improvement of public transport - practically nonexistent - and the creation of facilities such as schools or outpatient clinics.3
In 1976 the construction of a park was requested. The Creueta quarry was abandoned, and the intention was to build flats there, but the Creueta del Coll park was finally inaugurated.4 In 1992 a civic center was installed in the building of the former Editorial Bruguera.5
Currently the neighborhood of Coll is affected by the Tres Turons urban project.
